If you are interested in the field of human resource management, you will be able to work in an office environment.  You also may be able to travel, particularly if you are going to be recruiting new employees or if you will be going to professional meetings.  You can expect that you will probably be working a forty hour week, yet working for more hours may be necessary during some points.  Usually human resource managers will not need to work weekends.

If you are interested in this field, you probably would like to know what the training and education requirements are for this field.  Well, first you will begin by needing to earn a bachelor's degree.  Human resource degrees, labor relations degrees, and personnel administration degrees are available at the majority of universities and colleges for the master's degree level, but often not at the bachelor's degree level.  Therefore this may require you to take classes in business, management, psychology, and communication during your bachelor's degree.  It is also very important that you are proficient in accounting and in finance as math is a big part of the job.  If you are hoping for a very advanced level job, you will also need a very advanced level degree, so a master's degree in an area such as business administration, labor relations, or human resources will likely be necessary to obtain a job in the higher end of the field of human resource managers.

The tasks required of you while working as a human resources manager will depend on your education and the amount of experience you have in the field.  If you are a beginner, you may initially have tasks such as answering phone calls, putting information into the computer, researching, and putting together handbooks for employees.  Some human resources managers will be responsible for a certain department of a company, but others will be responsible for all of the employees in an entire company.  Human resource managers will need to interview prospective employees, classify the jobs of the company, and share benefits with the employees. 

Human resource managers have many responsibilities.  They will do the hiring for the company and make sure that the qualifications of the hired employee match those required by the position.  They also inform employees of their benefits.  They may be responsible for handling pay of employees also and payroll, depending on the company.  Human resource managers are often responsible for professional development of the employees and for motivating the employees of the company to improve their performance.  They may evaluate the employees.  They need to be good listeners and also able to listen to employees and resolve problems.  This requires them to have excellent listening skills, communication skills, and be able to see multiple viewpoints. 

We have already learned that human resource managers need to have at minimum a bachelor's degree, but preferably a master's degree, but it is also important that human resource managers have a number of skills. First, human resource managers need excellent communication skills, so they have to be able to both write and speak well.  Being able to communicate in a foreign language is also particularly helpful, especially if the company employs a number of immigrants or has employees or branches of the company in other countries.   Human resource managers need to also have computer skills and knowledge as well as being familiar with computer software and computer systems.  Certainly human resource managers should be very professional and have integrity.  They need to have an ability to be able to listen to multiple sides of a story and to be fair-minded.  They also must be trustworthy and have integrity, as they often will deal with material and information about employees that may be of a sensitive nature. Finally, companies want human resource managers who will be committed to their company.  As you can see, there are many skills that are needed for a human resource manager.

Nearly every industry needs human resource managers who can be responsible for paperwork, benefits, hiring, and even professional development of employees.  This means that there are many opportunities for you if you are a newcomer to employment and are interested in this field in college or if you are already in the human resources department but are interested in a promotion.  Working as a human resource manager will allow you to make a great salary.   Your median salary expectation is around $95,000 a year in this field, but you may make anywhere from around $57,000 and more than $165,000.  Your pay will depend largely on the location of the company, your experience, your education, the field of the company, and a variety of other factors.
